Listening to...

I have been living in denial. For the past week and a half my roommates and I have been living la vida Navidad.
(Can you guess who is who?)

Anyways... evidently the rest of the world has been in study mode. Hardcore.
So, while I was baking cookies, Christmas shopping online, taking long lunches that involve tiramisu, trimming the tree, spiking the egg nog, etc. everyone else was hitting the books.

That means today is all business. At least until tomorrow at 4 when Intercultural Communication and Political Systems of Africa are donezo and I am finished with exams, not to mention my major and my minor. Say whaaa?

Here's some wintry study music in case you're in the same boat as me on this blustery day. Happy listening!

P.S. As for the Christmas elves? Jordan is the naked one (duh) I'm the one with the cute tush and sexy boots (again, duhh) and Brit is the blondie.

Roasted Tomato Tart

This weekend I made a roasted tomato tart for our little Christmas gathering. It was pretty tasty. And super simple. So simple, in fact, that I feel kind of silly posting the "recipe" but it travels well and is a crowd pleaser (wait... are we talking about me? or the tart? just kidding... kind of... not really) Ok, here goes!

1. Slice 4-5 tomatoes, season with salt and pepper, and roast at 250 for about an hour. If you're short on time you can up the heat and reduce the time. (This is important because nobody like a soggy tart, and roasting helps get rid of some of the liquid.)
(Note: Wearing competing plaids is completely optional.)

2. I used store-bought puff pastry. I know I am delusional, but not to the point where I would try to make my own puff pastry. So instead I bought the frozen kind, let it thaw overnight, and devoted the extra time to styling my hair. Good strategy, huh? Ok, so you roll out the puff pastry, brush it with a mixture of eggs and water (egg wash) and cover it with cheese. I used an Italian cheese blend with mozzarella, provolone, Parmesan, etc. However, it would have been significantly better with goat cheese. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20. I also used some Italian seasoning, but fresh herbs would be infinitely better (duh).
(Now of course, the velcro rollers, disaster kitchen, and the roommate making zucchini fritters in a towel are all optional, but what fun would it be without them?)
 3. Pop that baby in the oven at 350 for about 20-30 minutes and you're in business.
It even looks like Christmas... and you can't beat that. If you really wanted to be a baller you could reduce some balsamic vinegar and drizzle it on top. Unfortunately though, the hair took precedence and I didn't get around to it.

Secret Santa

I have always had a certain fondness for giving gifts. From the shopping to the wrapping, all of it is just so fun. We did a little Secret Santa with friends on Friday night and I was obviously really excited...
(Because you're not really having fun until your top lip completely disappears. Seriously? What the heck.)

Anyways... I had Alicia!
We had a $15-$20 limit, so I decided to make a little basket of joy. It made a lot of sense in my head when I birthed the genius idea.
But when Alicia opened up the first thing (pasta) she was a little confused. But a lot amused. Such a good sport! :)
I told her to keep opening and it would make more sense in the end. (Hopefully)
Things started looking up when she got to the good stuff: An Italian Chianti. (Thanks Dad for helping me select.)
The basket also included a sparkly, red candle and some chocolate covered sunflower seeds.

The whole idea behind the basket was that it would be a nice relaxing break on night during the crazy exam week/ holiday season. Even if she hated it Alicia was still nice to me...
So of course it is better to give than receive, but this is what Maegan gave me:
A gorgeous glitzy scarf (it's white with silver AND gold... holler) and a cute little black sequin clutch. (and we all know how I feel about sequins.)

What are you giving this holiday season?

Guilt-free Friday!

Happy Friday! Today is especially fun because it is the 2nd Annual Elf Day! This year my unsuspecting roommates will be joining in forced to participate in the fun. Hope your weekend is festive too!

Hey it's ok...

...to have a seriously sore bicep... from grocery shopping.

...if it takes a few cups of coffee to really bring out your inner elf.

...to be filled with Christmas cheer... until that jerk in the Prius ignores your turn signal and whips it into that parking space faster than you can say sabotage. (And to seriously considering decking his halls.)

Sparkle-icious + the market (continued)

This afternoon while I was driving I realized that I left our the "+ the market" portion of this morning's post. True Life: I'm a crack in the head.
Anyways... In my personal finance class we each had to pick a stock at the beginning of the semester, and the person who's stock increased/grew/whatever the most (obviously I haven't learned much...) was the winner. Well.... I picked Ebay.
And I din't win. I was in the top 10 though. Starbuck was in the top 10 as well. (Why didn't I pick Starbucks?!) But the winner picked...
I was moderately pissed because I think I single-handedly made her win with my OPI addiction.

That's all.

Sparkle-icious + the market

Have you seen Burlesque? Me either. But I did my part to support Cher's Botox fund by purchasing Sparkle-icious from OPI's new Burlesque Collection. Adore adore adore.
It is ridiculously fun and festive. Perfect for anything from a Christmas cookie swap to a swanky holiday soiree!

don't judge a book by its cover...

With classes winding down for the semester and the impending Christmas sabbatical, I knew it was time to stock up on books! (Warning: I'm about to nerd out...real bad) One of the things I really enjoy about breaks from school is the opportunity to read whatever I want without feeling guilty because I haven't touched my assigned reading. While at the library last week I selected:
I've always been particularly interested in reading "the classics" (blame it on my hoity-toity private school education, ha) But there's just something romantic and lovely about delving into a book that my grandparents read when they were my age.

This post would be mega lame if I just talked about what books I'm reading. So here's the (more) exciting part. I saw this awesome website in a magazine this weekend. They make these really cool shirts featuring out-of-print book covers. Here are a few from some of my all-time favorite books...
BUT WAIT (here's the really mega super cool thing) for every shirt you buy, they donate a book to a community in need through their partnership with Books for Africa! Rad? I think so too. Wouldn't this be a fun Christmas gift for the bookworm on your list? And bibliophile or not, they are still cool shirts!

Side note: I have got to stop saying mega. The sideways glances that I get from people are starting to happen a little too frequently. And seriously... a girl who reads the classics does not say words like "mega."
